2 Nov 2009There’s a lot of debate among parents in the US about the H1N1 vaccine. Some of the parents of small children I’ve spoken to over the last week are seriously debating whether to get it. Many are deciding not to give their child yet another vaccine.
However, what if H1N1 was the leading killer of children, responsible for one out of every five childhood deaths in the United States? There wouldn’t be any debate at all about it. Every parent would want their child innoculated immediately, and the current stockpiles of the vaccine – already in short supply – would be totally inadequate to keep pace with demand.

20 Feb 2009A new study just released found blacks remain less likely than whites to undergo total knee replacement, an important intervention for reducing pain and improving physical function among those with disabling knee osteoarthritis. The study also found total knee replacements are increasing substantially in both populations. According to the Arthritis Foundation, the research underscores the need for healthcare providers and people of all races to take proactive measures in preventing and managing the disease.

20 Feb 2009A study from the Buck Institute for Age Research offers a revolutionary new model for Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a devastating neurodegenerative disorder which afflicts 24 million people worldwide. In an effort to unravel the normal function of a protein implicated in AD, scientists in California and France have discovered a naturally occurring protein that provides a new therapeutic target for the disease. The finding upsets the current theory that AD is a disease of toxicity stemming from damage caused by sticky plaques that collect in the brain – this research points to the condition as a disorder involving an imbalance in signaling between neurons. The study appears online in the Nature publication Cell Death and Differentiation.

Government Officials Eye Safety of Quit-Smoking Drug Chantix
The quit-smoking drug Chantix is being grounded for pilots and air traffic controllers, and Chantix use may be reason for medical examiners to disqualify interstate truckers and bus drivers.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ruled on Wednesday that “Chantix was no longer acceptable for use by pilots and controllers,” FAA spokesperson Les Dorr tells WebMD. And the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration — the branch of the U.S. Department of Transportation that oversees trucking and busing — has told medical advisors that Chantix use could put the brakes on an interstate truck or bus driver’s medical fitness for duty.

Drugs and Nicotine-Replacement Therapies Better Than Placebo at Smoking Cessation
Smoking-cessation drugs and many nicotine-replacement therapies are more than twice as effective at helping smokers quit than going it alone.
A new analysis of 69 studies comparing seven different smoking-cessation treatments shows six of the seven treatments were more effective than placebo in helping smokers quit the habit for at least six months to a year.
